Beatriz Ramo López de Angulo

Beatriz Ramo es una arquitecta, urbanista, investigadora y escritora española residente en los Países Bajos.
Es una voz crítica reconocida en el ámbito de la arquitectura, especialmente en el campo de la vivienda colectiva, donde cuestiona la continua estandarización de los procesos de producción residencial. Sostiene que la crisis de la vivienda es también una crisis de diseño, poniendo en duda la idea de que la escasez pueda resolverse únicamente mediante un aumento de la producción. Su trabajo —a través de la investigación, la escritura y la práctica construida— desarrolla estrategias concretas para una vivienda adaptable y asequible que responda a la diversidad y a las necesidades cambiantes de los hogares contemporáneos, defendiendo una posición clara que desafía los modelos dominantes de diseño y producción de vivienda. En 2024, Beatriz recibió el Premio Nacional Francés ARVHA para Mujeres en la Arquitectura por su investigación sobre vivienda y por el proyecto experimental de vivienda START-Ivry.
Se graduó en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Valencia (ETSAV), España. En 2002 obtuvo una beca para estudiar en la Universidad Tecnológica de Eindhoven (TU Eindhoven), en los Países Bajos. Trabajó con Rem Koolhaas en la Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), donde participó en proyectos como la sede de CCTV en Pekín y el Wyly Theatre de Dallas, antes de fundar su propio estudio, STAR strategies + architecture, en Rotterdam en 2005.
Desde 2007, Beatriz Ramo ha sido profesora invitada en diversas instituciones de arquitectura, urbanismo y diseño de interiores en los Países Bajos, entre ellas las Academias de Arquitectura de Ámsterdam y Tilburg y el Instituto Sandberg. Asimismo, es invitada regularmente como crítica externa en distintas escuelas europeas de arquitectura, como el Instituto Berlage, la AHO de Oslo, la Escuela Chalmers de Gotemburgo o los Ateliers de Création Urbaine (ACU) de París. Ha formado parte del jurado de numerosos concursos de arquitectura en Francia (por ejemplo, Réinventer Paris), Suiza, los Países Bajos y Noruega, donde presidió el jurado del concurso Europan 12.
Beatriz Ramo ha impartido conferencias internacionalmente y ha participado en debates públicos en destacadas instituciones culturales y académicas, entre ellas la Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine y el Pavillon de l’Arsenal de París, la Bauhaus-Universität de Weimar, la Galería Nacional de Arte de Vilna, la SCA de Buenos Aires, LUCA en Luxemburgo, la ENSA de Versalles, el Architecture Club de Kiev, la Escuela Chalmers de Gotemburgo y el Museo de Arquitectura de Wroclaw.
A lo largo de su trayectoria ha recibido diversas ayudas y becas, entre ellas las subvenciones FVBK del gobierno neerlandés destinadas a estudios emergentes al inicio de su carrera. En 2025 obtuvo además dos ayudas del Creative Industries Fund para profundizar en su investigación sobre métodos de contratación y promoción que refuercen el papel de los arquitectos en los procesos de desarrollo inmobiliario, así como para desarrollar una publicación sobre su investigación en vivienda y sobre el proyecto experimental construido START-Ivry, orientado a mejorar las condiciones habitacionales.
Desde 2008 es editora ejecutiva colaboradora y miembro del consejo editorial de MONU – Magazine on Urbanism, publicación con la que colabora desde su primer número. Para MONU ha realizado, entre otras, entrevistas a figuras clave del discurso arquitectónico contemporáneo, como Adolfo Natalini (Superstudio), Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Petra Blaisse, Reinier de Graaf, Floris Alkemade, Winy Maas y Bjarke Ingels.
En 2012 fue nominada, en la disciplina de arquitectura, al programa «Young Talents in Architecture» organizado por la Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. Entre 2012 y 2016 formó parte del Comité Científico del AIGP – Atelier International du Grand Paris, asesorando al gobierno francés en cuestiones relacionadas con la vivienda.
Beatriz ha mantenido una posición crítica respecto a la arquitectura y ha publicado diversos ensayos a lo largo de los años, entre ellos O’Mighty-Green, The Re-creation of the European City, In the Name of the Past: Countering the Preservation Crusades y The Housing Crisis Is Also a Design Crisis.
A través de su estudio STAR ha desarrollado proyectos de muy diversas escalas y programas, manteniendo una atención constante a la vivienda colectiva, un ámbito que considera el trabajo más profundo y trascendente que puede abordar un arquitecto. Su labor propone elevar la vivienda a la categoría de infraestructura social, con especial atención a la adaptabilidad, el uso a largo plazo y la eficiencia espacial.

Beatriz Ramo is a Spanish architect, urban designer, researcher and writer living in the Netherlands.
She is a recognised critical voice in architecture, particularly in the field of collective housing, where she challenges the ongoing standardisation of housing production. She argues that the housing crisis is also a design crisis, questioning the assumption that the shortage can be solved through production alone. Her work—across research, writing, and built projects—develops concrete design strategies for adaptable and affordable housing that respond to the diversity and evolving needs of contemporary households, advancing a clear position that challenges prevailing models of housing design and production. In 2024, Beatriz was awarded the ARVHA National French Prize for Women in Architecture for her housing research and experimental housing project START-Ivry.
She graduated from the Technical School of Architecture in Valencia(ETSAV), Spain. In 2002, she received a scholarship to study at the TU Eindhoven, the Netherlands. She worked for Rem Koolhaas at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), where she participated in projects such as the CCTV Headquarters in Beijing and the Wyly Theatrein Dallas, before founding her office, STAR strategies + architecture, in Rotterdam in 2005.
Since 2007, Beatriz Ramo has been a guest lecturer at various architecture, urbanism, and interior design institutions in the Netherlands, such as the Academies of Architecture in Amsterdam and Tilburg and the Sandberg Institute. Beatriz is regularly invited as a guest critic at several European architecture schools, including the Berlage Institute, AHO in Oslo, Chalmers School in Gothenburg, or the ACU – Ateliers de Création Urbaine in Paris. She has been a jury member for several architecture competitions in France (e.g., Réinventer Paris), Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Norway, where she was the chairman of the juryfor the Europan 12 competition.
Beatriz Ramo has lectured internationally and participated in public debates at leading cultural and academic institutions, including the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine and Pavillon de l’Arsenal in Paris, the Bauhaus-Universität in Weimar, the National Art Gallery in Vilnius, the SCA in Buenos Aires, LUCA in Luxembourg, ENSA in Versailles, Architecture Club in Kiev, Chalmers School in Gothenburg, and the Museum of Architecture in Wroclaw.
Beatriz received several grants, including FVBK grants from the Dutch government for young practices at the beginning of her career, and two grants from the Creative Industries Fund in 2025 to further deepen her research into procurement methods that strengthen the role of architects within the development process and to develop a publication on her housing research and built-case experimental project START-Ivry, aimed at improving housing conditions.
Since 2008, she has been the managing contributing editor of MONU – Magazine on Urbanism, and a member of its editorial board, where she has collaborated since its first issue. For MONU, Beatriz has, among others, conducted interviews with key figures in contemporary architectural discourse, including Adolfo Natalini (Superstudio), Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Petra Blaisse, Reinier de Graaf, Floris Alkemade, Winy Maas, and Bjarke Ingels.
In 2012, Beatriz was nominated in the discipline of architecture for the “Young Talents in Architecture” programme organised by the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. From 2012 to 2016, she served on the Scientific Committee of the AIGP – Atelier International du Grand Paris, advising the French government on housing issues.

With her office STAR, she has led projects across very different scales and programmes, with a sustained focus on collective housing—a field she considers the most profound and impactful work an architect can undertake. Her work develops proposals that elevate housing to the level of social infrastructure, with a particular focus on adaptability, long-term use, and spatial efficiency.
